The appliance decision framework

Before buying any countertop appliance, answer these three questions:

  1. How often will I actually use it? Daily is the threshold for a $300+ appliance. Weekly is fine for $100–$200. If the honest answer is "monthly at best," reconsider.
  2. Where will it live? Counter appliances that have to be put away tend not to get used. If it's not staying on the counter, will you pull it out?
  3. What does it replace or enable? Appliances that replace stovetop time (pressure cooker) or enable new cooking you wouldn't otherwise do (espresso, pasta) earn their space.
